The dog even had its paws on the steering wheel.

Police pulled over a woman caught travelling along a major road with her dog on her lap.

She said her dog was 'poorly' but officers told her that the pooch was a distraction while driving.

The dog was photographed with its paws on her arms and the steering wheel, which police said would completely disrupt her view.

They moved the dog to the boot and dealt with the driver but not before one of the officers got a photo with the puppy co-pilot.

Leicestershire Roads Policing Unit tweeted,

"If you have a poorly puppy we advise you don’t let it sit on your lap and put its paws on your arms whilst you’re driving. we also strongly advise you don’t let it put its paws on the steering wheel and completely obstruct your view!

"Driver dealt with & dog moved to the boot!"

Rule 57 of the Highway Code states:

"When in a vehicle make sure dogs or other animals are suitably restrained so they cannot distract you while you are driving or injure you, or themselves, if you stop quickly. A seat belt harness, pet carrier, dog cage or dog guard are ways of restraining animals in cars."
