Police say the new Quarry man carving in Stoney Stanton has been vandalised.
Officers from Blaby are investigating.
The tree sculpture was completed in June by local Leicestershire carver Peter Lead Beater.
Recently there were calls to name the carving but the Parish Council issued a statement saying he would remain anonymous:
"The Parish Council are aware that residents have discussed the possibility of naming the 'quarryman' tree carving. The members have decided to leave 'him' anonymous, this is being more inclusive - a bit like the unknown warrior. We know he has fondly claimed several nicknames and we welcome the kind comments and positive feedback we have received."

The sculpture was installed after the village lost its much-loved christmas tree.
